Context

The Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank Limited (TADB) is a state-owned development finance institution established in 2015 aiming to catalyse access to finance to smallholder farmers and SMEs in the agriculture sector. TADB seeks assistance in developing and rolling out a Gender Scheme and anĀ overall Gender Strategy for the bank including financial and non-financial services for women and youth in agribusiness, and in engaging in a public-private dialogue with stakeholders in the agriculture value chain.

Objective

The intervention consisted of the following components:

  1. A technical study to assess the landscape of agribusiness financing to women and youth, including a comparison with other DFIs and activities of commercial financial institutions within Tanzania;
  2. Advisory services to develop a gender scheme and strategy for TADB including tailored financial products and a support program for women and youth actors in the agriculture value chain;
  3. A workshop to validate the study results and the gender scheme as well as to build and expand partnerships and dialogue among public, private and non-state actors along the agriculture value chain, such as NGOs, agriculture processors or farmer associations.

Result

In July 2022, the TADB Board of Directors approved the Gender Strategy and Gender Policy which were developed under the project. As part of the strategy implementation, TADB will also establish a Gender & Youth Unit. The Gender Scheme is planned to launch in Q4 2022. TADB will be in a better position to engage with and support female and youth actors in the agriculture sector and value chain.
