What?

In these self-paced training modules you will learn how to develop a gender finance approach in the development finance institution. It is an interactive way to learn more about institutional gender mainstreaming, actions and measures to be taken in the organization to ensure gender inclusion. The training contains videos, texts, interactive exercises and quizzes, and refers to additional sources so that participants can explore specific topics in more depth if they wish so. Who is this course for?

This course targets primarily representatives from DFIs as well as public authorities and private sector stakeholders in African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries.

 

What will you learn?

Participants who have successfully completed this course…

  • will comprehend basic concepts from gender finance as well as understand the importance of gender analysis for the organisation
  • will be able to introduce and promote gender-lens finance in the internal and external operations of an institution by developing action plans, policies and gender-specific financial or non-financial products
  • will know how to monitor, evaluate and communicate about the impact of gender mainstreaming and inclusion in their offer

 

How much time do you need to invest?

The course is organised into 9 modules. Each module takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete, and the whole course takes around 3 hours.

At the end of the course, participants will take a final test to assess their knowledge and receive a certificate of completion.

Modules Overview

Module 1 – What is the business case for gender finance?

  • Know the basic concepts and definitions related to gender and gender finance
  • Understand the business case for gender finance for Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)
  • Understand the status quo and the barriers to women’s financial inclusion

Module 2 – Introducing gender finance step by step

  • Understand the process of introducing gender finance – both institutionally (internally facing) and for client-facing activities
  • Be aware of success factors and potential challenges
  • Know which key stakeholders need to be involved

Module 3 – From gender analysis to an impactful gender policy

  • Understand why it is important to conduct a gender analysis
  • Know what information to gather and analyse in the gender analysis
  • Know how to develop a realistic and impactful gender policy

Module 4 – Put your gender vision into action

  • Understand how gender mainstreaming differs from other projects
  • Know how to develop an action plan based on the initial gender analysis and policy
  • Know how to develop realistic yet ambitious objectives and indicators

Module 5 – Monitor and evaluate impact on gender inclusion

  • Understand the importance of monitoring and evaluation for gender mainstreaming
  • Know what steps to take to establish the M&E system and ensure effective reporting
  • Understand how to use the gathered data to optimise performance, inform decision-making and improve and assess impact

Module 6 – Internal measures for gender inclusion

  • Be aware of how gender inequalities arise within a DFI
  • Know what measures can be put in place to become a (more) gender-inclusive DFI

Module 7 – Client-facing measures for gender inclusion

  • Have a deeper understanding of how to go about promoting gender finance in client-facing interventions
  • Have an overview of possible measures: gender-inclusive financial and non-financial products and services
  • Understand how successful measures are often a combination of financial and non-financial offer and take into account communication channels

Module 8 – Communication and marketing through a gender lens

  • Understand how communication and marketing can be powerful tools in promoting gender finance
  • Understand the importance of choosing words carefully in gender-inclusive communication
  • Know the best practices in promoting gender-responsive communication, including how to design gender-inclusive campaigns

Module 9 – Conclusion

  • Have a good overview of the main steps your DFI can take to promote gender mainstreaming
  • Have reflected on the key lessons learned and takeaways from the course
  • Be equipped with additional resources to continue your gender mainstreaming journey
